Chapter 01 • Tradition

Meet Baba Yaga & Leshy

Long before Halloween became popular, Russian people had their own mysterious traditions, filled with magical creatures, ancient beliefs, and stories told on long autumn evenings. Deep in the dark forests lived Леший, a mischievous spirit who protected the trees and animals and could lead travelers astray. In a small hut on chicken legs lived Баба Яга, a frightening old witch who tested those brave enough to enter her world. These fascinating characters appeared in Russian fairy tales, warning children about danger, teaching them to be clever, and reminding everyone to respect the power of nature. In this chapter, you’ll discover the enchanting world of Russian folklore, explore the traditions behind its most mysterious spirits, and learn vivid Russian vocabulary that brings these timeless legends to life.

A Walk in the Autumn Forest

English translation

A Walk in the Autumn Forest

One autumn day, Ivan goes into the forest. The forest is big and dark. Ivan sees a little hut. The hut stands on chicken legs!

Baba Yaga lives in the hut. She is old and cunning. Baba Yaga looks at Ivan and asks:

“Who are you? Where are you going?”

“I am Ivan. I am looking for the way home,” the boy answers.

Baba Yaga smiles and says:

“Good! But first, help me find my magic key.”

Ivan looks for the key under the trees. Suddenly, he sees Leshy. Leshy is the spirit of the forest. He is tall, green, and very mysterious.

“Don’t be afraid, Ivan!” Leshy says. “Here is your key!”

Ivan takes the key and gives it to Baba Yaga. She is very happy.

“Thank you, Ivan! You are kind and brave. Now you can go home.”

Ivan finds the way home and returns before nightfall. From that day on, he knows that the forest is home not only to animals but also to magical creatures!
