American Christmas traditions and their English names

What associations do you have with the word "Christmas"?

Snow, Christmas tree,

hot chocolate?

Or maybe a festive Christmas barbecue on the beach with friends?

If you are a resident of the Northern Hemisphere, then December is a cold, dark month for you.

But if you live in the Southern Hemisphere, then for you, Christmas is the height of summer.

And since the United States is located in different climatic zones, Christmas traditions may not be the same everywhere.

Today, I will tell you how Christmas is celebrated in the northern and eastern states of America.

Christmas is one of the most important holidays in the USA.

This holiday, which is celebrated on December 25, is the birthday of Jesus Christ.

However, there are many secular traditions associated with Christmas.

Most of the most common Christmas traditions and customs can be divided into four categories.

We'll start with family and friends.

1. Family get-togethers

On Christmas Eve, which is called in English “Christmas Eve”, families try to spend time together,

like Christmas itself, on December 25th.

Such family holidays where relatives gather are called “a get-together”.

But it also happens that people live away from their families and cannot come home for Christmas.

In this case, they can spend Christmas night with friends in their family circle.

2. Gifts

At Christmas, it is customary to give gifts to relatives, friends, and colleagues.

If they give you something in return, you can say that you exchanged gifts.

3. Charity

At Christmas, it is customary to help the homeless or those

who do not have money for food.

During the holiday season, from Thanksgiving to Christmas,

people do charitable work especially intensively.

There are many other traditions associated with Christmas in the USA.
